Creating a Key

1. Go to your API Keys dashboard
2. Click Create New Key
3. Give it a descriptive name (e.g., “Production”, “Development”)
4. Copy the key immediately — it won’t be shown again

Managing Keys

From the dashboard you can:

• View usage — see request counts and cost per key
• Rename — update the key’s label
• Rotate — generate a new key value while keeping the same configuration
• Revoke — permanently disable a key

Key Rotation

To rotate a key without downtime:

1. Create a new key
2. Update your application to use the new key
3. Verify the new key works in production
4. Revoke the old key

Rate Limits

Rate limits are applied per API key: When you exceed a rate limit, you’ll receive a 429 Too Many Requests response with a Retry-After header.

Using BYOK (Bring Your Own Key)

OpenModex also supports using your own provider API keys for direct access:

1. Go to Settings → Provider Keys in the dashboard
2. Add your provider API key (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic)
3. Keys are encrypted at rest using AWS KMS envelope encryption
4. Requests will be routed using your provider key when available

This gives you the routing and monitoring benefits of OpenModex while using your own provider agreements.
